Book Is Better Club: The Color Purple book cover highlighting the struggles, resilience, and sisterhood of African American women.

Whether you’re a fan of novels or not, The Color Purple by Alice Walker will surely inspire you to lift up your voice to the multidimensionality and unspoken stories about Black communities.

Book Is Better Club: The Color Purple offers a depth look at Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning novel, a powerful story of African American women’s resilience, sisterhood, and triumph over abuse.

Set in early 20th-century rural Georgia, the novel follows 2 sisters, Celie and Nettie as they endure hardship, separation, and racism while sustaining hope and love throughout the years. Through heartfelt letters, the novel explores themes of healing, forgiveness, self-discovery, and empowerment.

This special event at Liz’s Book Bar features a book discussion led by bookseller and bartender Siah, followed by a screening of the acclaimed film adaptation. Attendees will gain deeper insight into the novel’s theme and its enduring relevance happening today. Your ticket also includes a $5 off drink from the bar.

Join the community of readers while you explore the truth behind the sisters in The Color Purple on August 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in Brooklyn, NY.
