The Mitchels Housing Projects are located in the Mott Haven neighborhood in the Bronx. The full address of the Mitchel Houses is 300 East 138th Street, Bronx, NY 10454. These houses were named after Senator Senator MacNeil Mitchell. Constructed in 1954, these houses consist of 11 buildings and house around 3800 residents.
Originally these houses were built as an effort from NYCHA to provide affordable housing to low and middle income New Yorkers, post World War 2, and are part of the Mitchell-Lama developments. These houses have dealt with issues such as aging infrastructure, maintenance issues, as well as concerns over crime and safety. However in recent times there have been efforts to preserve and rehabilitate Mitchell-Lama developments, by providing more funding to these developments. These houses were also home to some notable figures. These include Nate Archibald, a former NBA Player, and Ivan Barkley, a former boxer.
Mitchels Houses come from a rich history, and have developed throughout the course of their existence. Clearly exemplified by the type of people that have come out of here as well as the resilience shown by the residents who continue to make the community a community.
